How To Style a Leather Skirt

Butter soft and body skimming, leather skirts have fast become the new grown-up classic.  Get the fit, the style, and the colour suit you and they will be your 'go-to' piece for years to come.  They're an easy upgrade from a regular tailored skirt and if you get it right, they're actually super comfortable and oh so stylish.

What to consider when buying a leather skirt

Length & Style

The length and style of the skirt are crucial, and will make the difference between the skirt looking stylish and it looking frumpy or or too airbrushed.  Hitting at the knee can hit the right spot for most women but go midi if that's your style, or a little shorter if your legs can take it (but never too short).

Quality

Leather has come along way since the 1980's.  Shiny, stiff leather was never flattering and has thankfully been upgraded to butter-soft leathers that skim the body and are super easy to move in.

A soft, supple leather will mould itself to your body; whereas a hard, stiff leather will add bulk where you do not it need it.

Colour

Choose a colour that suits you and works with the rest of your wardrobe. Leather is not a cheap fabric, so invest in something that you can wear again and again, and the cost per wear will make it worth the investment.  Think of what your favourite neutral is - navy, black, camel, burgundy, olive.  These 'wear with anything' colours are perfect when it comes to choosing the colour of your leather skirt.

How to style a leather skirt

The great thing about the perfect leather skirt is that it can be worn on so many different occasions. Here's how to style it depending on where you want to wear it.

How to wear a leather skirt to work

Dress codes at work have changed significantly over the last 10 years or so and now almost anything goes, but getting it right is still as important.

The perfect leather skirt for the office needs to be knee length or below. Slits can work, but just check how they work when you sit down as well as when you are standing. A slit at the back would work best.

A Pencil skirt or A-line will portray the right image, and have the waistband sit on your natural waist. If you like to wear belts, choose one with belt loops, whereas if you like to wear your top loose, the loops will add bulk where you don't need it.

The colours to consider are neutrals or subdued colours - black is a classic, but navy, stone, burgundy, olive or grey would also work well.

The skirt will look great with a silk blouse as the contrast between the heavier leather and the lightness and movement of the silk will give off an air of sophistication.  Consider tonal colours.  A leather skirt and silk blouse in the same shade can look seriously striking and the block of colour is super flattering.

A leather skirt will also look great with a biker jacket in a boucle where again the contrasting luxe-fabrics and textures work well for workwear.

A heel, whether block, kitten or high, will finish off the outfit perfectly.

How to wear a leather skirt on a night out

Whether it's date night or lunch with the girls, a leather skirt adds a certain touch of class to the occasion.

The perfect length for this skirt is what makes you feel great about your legs! If you're blessed with long, slim legs then above the knee will look great. However, for most women, it's all about playing up the part of your leg you like and hide the bits you don't!

So, if you don't like your thighs but you have good calves and ankles then have the hem just below the knee. If you don't like your calves then have the hem mid length.

Chose a colour that makes you happy and confident! Why not bold red, a vibrant violet, teal green, or a metallic blue?

Team the skirt with a sparkly top or a patterned blouse if it's date night. Heels, or a little ankle boot would complete the outfit.

For lunch with a girls, a funky trainer and an embellished top, or a plain top with statement jewellery will make you stand out from the crowd, whilst being super comfortable.

How to wear a leather skirt casually

The perfectly fitting leather skirt can be worn all day, and nothing is cooler than a distressed look leather.

Why not team your skirt with chunky boots and an oversized sweater for the ultimate in cool? Or a cami, blazer and black trainers for urban chic.

Keep the shape slim and long and choose darker, cool colours like black, gunmetal grey, metallic petrol or dark olive.
