Planning a wardrobe detox this year?  Follow our 5 steps to building a capsule collection

Did you promise yourself that you’d clear out your wardrobe this month?   If you have a closet full of clothes but still have those ‘nothing to wear moments’ maybe a wardrobe detox is much needed.  

But where do you start?  It’s hard to ditch pieces you’re emotionally or financially attached to – the jacket that helped get you your dream job or the suit that cost an arm and leg and it would break your heart to admit that you’ve only worn it on a handful of occasions.

The best place to start is to look at what you have and get the foundations in order.  The rest you can build around a key collection of capsule pieces.  So keep the timeless trench, the wear anywhere blazer, the perfectly fitting trousers.  But put aside the trousers that you’ve not been able to fasten since 2010.  If they don’t fit you now, the chances are they never will.

We’re seeing more and more clients who are opting for styles that don’t date.  Women are putting an emphasis on wearability and cost per wear.  It’s time to invest wisely.  It suits our awareness of sustainability. So yes, whilst it’s always fun to have some on-trend pieces, at last it looks like fast fashion is slowing down. 

But back to the wardrobe edit.  Here are our 5 steps to building a key collection of capsule pieces. 

1.             Don’t keep something that doesn’t fit you or suit your body shape

Be realistic.  Don’t hold onto those pieces what don’t fit you.  If they don’t fit you, pass them on to someone else or give to a charity.  You want your clothes to make you feel confident and comfortable.  If you bought something because it was on sale or because it was ‘trendy’ but have never worn it, it’s time to say goodbye to it.

2.             Create outfits from your favourite pieces

Look at what you’ve got and create outfits with other pieces in your wardrobe.  Look at colours that work together (we love blush pink, beige and burgundy shades right now).  Consider colour clashes (we’re thinking Megan in her purple dress and red coat combo).   Sometimes the pieces that you don’t usually wear can be given a new lease of life by being a little braver with your combinations.

3.        Uniform dressing

The best dressed women have a ‘style uniform’ that they stick to religiously.  Think skinny jeans and a blazer.  Trousers and a Chanel-style boucle jacket.  A pencil skirt and a silk shirt.  Find your formula and work your wardrobe around it.

4.        Embrace a capsule collection

Having a winning wardrobe doesn’t mean you need rails of clothes.   You also don’t need a huge budget.  A capsule collection of key pieces is the foundation to a killer closet.  Work out the essentials and if you’ve not already got them, consider investing in them.  Then add pieces that will work with those basic fashion must-haves.  A great pair of black cigarette trousers that can be teamed with a classic white shirt and black patent heels for a workwear look but can be teamed with white trainers and a grey marl sweatshirt or a cashmere for a weekend coffee.

5.        One in, one out

Once you’ve done a ‘Marie Kondo’ on your wardrobe, adopt a one in one out policy.  Every time you add something new, take a piece out and donate to  charity, pop it on ebay or give it to a friend.  It’s about keeping your closet clear and uncluttered.

 Having a clothes clear out is the perfect way to start your new year in style.  You’ll get to know every piece you own so that you can wear the clothes you love.
