Style Must-Have: The French Jacket. The jacket that pulls everything together

There are some pieces that are timeless and at the same time on-trend, like the pencil skirt or the Breton stripe.  The Chanel-inspired French Jacket is one of them.  There's a reason why Chanel reinvents the style season after season.  It's a fashion must-have.  It's the jacket that pulls every outfit together.

The French Jacket is one of the most versatile, hardworking pieces you can have in your wardrobe.  We love the look with feminine pieces; a cigarette trouser and a killer heel oozes timeless evening glamour.  But it's a style that looks super-cool paired with denim, flats and a plain white tee.

And not only does the French Jacket work from office to off-duty, from day to evening, it's a style that transcends the seasons.  It can be taken from Autumn (over a cashmere rollneck) to Spring (over a simple silk tee-shirt).

The origins of the French Jacket

The jacket was conceived by Coco Chanel.  A simple, elegant jacket in timeless boucle, it soon became a classic.  The Parisian woman's go-to style, it's a look at that continues to be worn by style icons in fashion capitals the world over.  Sienna Miller manages to make the look Boho-cool, Audrey Tatou (who played Coco Chanel in the 2009 film) wears it in that effortlessly chic way that only the French can.

That is Boucle?

Boucle has become synonymous with the classic Chanel jacket, but in fact is a yarn.  Boucle yarn contains loops that range in size from large, loose curls to tight circlets. In fact, the word boucle in French means "to curl".  The larger the loops, the more texture the finished material will contain. Like other woven textiles, several colours can be used to create an endless variety of designs and patterns.

Caring for Boucle

A Boucle jacket is something you will have in wardrobe for years, and so it needs to be looked after. It will need to be dry cleaned and hung in your wardrobe on a quality, well fitting wooden hanger to help keep its shape. Given the looped nature of Boucle, it would make sense to keep it in a cover in your wardrobe so that it doesn't get snagged by other items. As is so famously's worth it!

How to get the look just right: Invest in a statement piece you'll wear forever.

One of the big questions when it comes to clothes is what you should spend real money on versus what you should buy on the cheap.  Well, if there's one item worthy of the splurge it's the French Jacket.  Invest in a perfectly tailored French Jacket and have it ready to go when you need to add some polish to your style.  In fashion speak the jacket is practically referred to as 'the third piece' and we can't think of a better, more timeless third piece than a Chanel inspired item.  It's dressy, casual and everything in between.

Personalise your style.

No two jackets are the same.  Our clients can choose from a range of Boucle, Coating or Wool Flannel and can make a splash with a coloured lining of their choice.  We have to say, we love the look in Boucle and it's our most popular fabric choice.  Opt for classic black with a white edge or make the style more edgy with a leather trim.  Equally add a pop of colour with a jacket in a rich plum weave for autumn, or a soft pink for the spring. And if you love a neutral colour on the outside, why not add a jewel coloured lining.  A show stopping style!
